Sensitive Teeth After a Filling (Technique Tips for Dentists) 

In this dental video, I review the ways dentists can avoid post operative sensitivity through technique. Patients can have sensitive teeth for a variety of reasons including a large cavity. gum recession, periodontal disease and much more. However, there are techniques dentists can use to help avoid dental sensitivity after performing a filling. I take my time to review possible reasons that a patient might be having tooth pain, what causes sensitive teeth & much more. 

Sensitive Teeth After a Filling (Dentist Tips)

All composites shrink about 2% to 4%—that is inevitable. The consequences of unmanaged polymerization shrinkage (PS) can be open margins, post-op sensitivity, and more. There are many different ways to counteract the effects of PS; research shows that an even greater concern may be polymerization stress. In this video, Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz will share real-world strategies to minimize the effects of PS and stress.

Jose-Luis Ruiz, DDS, of Burbank, Calif, demonstrates one of the most important techniques in dentistry: adjusting the occlusion of a single tooth after any restorative procedure utilizing multiple-color articulating papers. This technique is simple and predictable, and Dr. Ruiz guides viewers through each step.

Adjusting Occlusion After Restoration

The clinical case studied in this video illustrates an ideal situation and good use of no-prep Vivaneers™. The patient had multiple diastema between the teeth, and additional tooth-length was desired. Additionally, the patient did not have any of the facial-limiting factors that are discussed. An analysis of the case points out various details that are to be considered before the placement of 10 no-prep Vivaneers™. A veneer "try-in" predicts a desirable esthetic outcome, achievement of objectives is demonstrated, and an excellent clinical result is realized in a short period of time. This is achieved in just 15 minutes, as technique tips are discussed and thoroughly demonstrated using close-up, over-the-shoulder videography of the various steps during the no-prep veneer placement procedure. Many practice tips are provided to help participants efficiently prepare, etch, place, clean-up, adjust and finish a no-prep case; and, concise information about burs, discs, cups, pastes and other supplies is provided.

Case of the Week: Immediate Implant Placement with the Hahn™ Implant


In this episode, Dr. Manalili and Dr. Chi are replacing poor fitting PFMs in the anterior on #8 and #9. The Glidewell.io In-Office Solution was used to fabricate BioTemps NOW provisionals prior to endodontic retreatment on #8. The treatment was finalized with chairside milled BruxZir Esthetic NOW crowns.

Few, if any, crown and bridge procedures do not begin with a local anesthetic injection. In patient surveys, fear of local anesthetic injections is typically either the #1 or #2 reason given for why people have avoided the dentist. In addition to the stress that the patient feels about the injection, published literature states that dentists miss inferior alveolar blocks 15-20% on the first attempt, which can result in a dentist attempting to work on a partially anesthetized tooth. Furthermore, most dental schools still only teach the traditional Halstead approach to lower blocks, essentially guaranteeing some degree of frustration.


This class demonstrates an injection for inferior alveolar block anesthesia which had a nearly 95% success rate in the literature—the Gow-Gates technique. Also demonstrated is an innovative injection for esthetic cases allow dentists to anesthetize the maxillary anterior teeth, as well as all palatal tissue and most facial tissue, without affecting the patient’s ability to smile utilizing the Anterior Middle Superior Alveolar nerve block. Also discussed is the enhanced action of buffered local anesthetic solutions.

Evaluate and Identify when single tooth anesthesia may be preferable to a nerve block.
Demonstrate how to administer the Gow-Gates Technique and the Anterior Middle Superior Alveolar Nerve Block, two injections not usually taught in Dental Schools.
