The new Element 5D builds on the existing lineup of Element scanners as a precise and full-colour scanner, while streamlining orthodontic and restorative workflows. The scanner comes in 2 configurations; a wheel stand (cart) and a scanner-only device that transforms any compatible laptop into a portable scanner - a handy option for practices with multiple locations who need a scanner that is convenient and easy to transport. We have been using the Element 5D over the past year. Below are our thoughts and how it competes in an ever competitive CAD/CAM market.

The Medit i500 is one of the latest newcomers on the intraoral scanner market. It touts itself as the 'easy entry into digital dentistry' and is one of the most affordable when compared to other scanners from big names such as 3Shape, CEREC, Carestream Dental, Planmeca etc. It may be affordable, but does it deliver in terms of performance?

Getting into calcified canals can be long/tortuous and at times panic ridden.  I get it - been there - many times.  I've learned so many things from others over the years that I wanted to put them together in a series we'll call the calcified canal series.


How to Get Into Calcified Canals

In these times, ensuring that you find all the canals when a patient presents with pain is critical.  If the tooth is vital, then a pulpotomy is indicated (AAE May 2020), however, if the tooth is partially necrotic, that pulpotomy isn't going to work and you'll have to debride at least the necrotic canals.



Finding MB2: Molar Endo

In this video we look at the why, when and wherefore of two visit endodontics using the retreatment of a 5 canal maxillary molar as an example. The case is prepared and disinfected in one visit, and sealer with a bioceramic sealer and single cone technique.

In this video presentation I look at the non-surgical retreatment of a maxillary second premolar with three roots and a fractured instrument that had to be removed from the DB canal. The case was obturated with vertically compacted gutta percha and restored with light-cured composite

In this video I root treat a moderately difficult maxillary second molar. I discuss pre-operative assessment of the radiograph, locating the root canal orifices, coronal flaring and glide path creation followed by rapid tapering using NiTi instruments. Finally the case is obturated using a simple bioceramic sealer and single cone technique before restoring the tooth with composite.
